Why Google Maps matters so much in Kolkata

Kolkata is a city of neighbourhoods. A customer in Behala rarely travels to Salt Lake for a salon, and a shopper in Gariahat wants the best store within walking distance. That is exactly how Google Maps works: it shows the most relevant, nearby and trusted businesses for each search. If your profile is weak, a competitor two lanes away takes the call.

The three things Google looks at

Google ranks local businesses on three broad signals:

  • Relevance – how well your profile matches what the customer searched for
  • Distance – how close you are to the person searching or the area they named
  • Prominence – how well known and trusted your business looks, including reviews and mentions around the web

You cannot move your shop, but you can improve relevance and prominence a lot.

Step-by-step checklist

1. Pick the right primary category

Your primary category is the single most important setting. A sweet shop should not be listed only as a "Store", and a dental clinic should be a "Dentist", not just a "Clinic". Add a few accurate secondary categories too.

2. Get the pin and address exactly right

Kolkata addresses can be confusing, with lanes, by-lanes and multiple names for the same area. Place your pin on the actual entrance and mention a well-known landmark such as a metro station, crossing or market in your description.

3. Fill every section

  • Business hours, including special hours for Durga Puja, Kali Puja and other holidays
  • Services or products with short, clear descriptions
  • A description that names your area naturally, for example Jadavpur or New Town
  • Phone number and a WhatsApp-friendly contact

4. Add real photos regularly

Shop front, interiors, team and products. Real photos help customers recognise your place when they arrive and keep the profile looking active.

5. Ask every happy customer for a review

Reviews are a key prominence signal. Ask politely, make it easy with a short link, and reply to every review, good or bad, in a professional tone. Never buy or fake reviews; Google removes them and can suspend profiles.

6. Post updates

Use Google posts for offers, new arrivals and festival timings. Regular activity shows Google and customers that you are open and engaged.

7. Keep details consistent everywhere

Your name, address and phone should match on your website, social pages and directories.
