A Google Business Profile (it used to be called Google My Business, or GMB) is your free business listing on Google. It's the box that appears on the right of Google Search β or in the list on Google Maps β with your name, rating, photos, hours, phone number and directions.
For local businesses it's often the first thing customers see, before your website, Instagram or anything else.
What your profile shows
- Business name, category and address (or service area)
- Phone number, website and opening hours
- Reviews and star rating
- Photos and videos β from you and from customers
- Posts with offers, events and updates
- Services, products, menus and booking links
Why it matters so much
When someone searches "dentist near me" or "best biryani in Jayanagar", Google shows a map with three businesses at the top. Most calls, visits and direction requests go to those three. A complete, active, well-reviewed profile is what gets you there.
It also builds trust. Customers compare ratings and photos in seconds. A profile with 12 reviews and three old photos loses to one with 400 reviews and fresh pictures β even if your service is better.
It's free β but it needs care
Creating a profile costs nothing. The work is in keeping it accurate and active: answering reviews, adding photos, posting updates and fixing problems like suspensions or verification issues before they cost you customers.
Does it matter for AI search too?
Yes. AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews increasingly answer "which is the best salon near me?" questions. They rely on the same kind of information β business details, reviews and mentions β that a strong profile provides.
