How to create a Google Business Profile the right way

Creating a Google Business Profile takes about 15 minutes. Creating one that gets verified, stays live and actually ranks takes a bit more care. Here's the right way to do it.

Before you start

• Search Google Maps for your business first. If a listing already exists (customers sometimes add one), claim it instead of creating a duplicate.
• Use a Google account you'll keep forever — ideally a business email you control, not an employee's personal account.
• Have your exact registered business name, address, phone and website ready.

Step by step

1. Go to google.com/business and sign in.
2. Enter your business name exactly as it appears on your signboard and documents. Don't add keywords like "Best Dentist Indiranagar" — that's against Google's rules and a common cause of suspension.
3. Choose the most specific primary category (e.g. "Pediatric dentist", not just "Dentist" if that's your focus).
4. Add your address. If customers don't visit you (plumbers, cleaners, consultants), hide the address and add the areas you serve instead.
5. Add phone number and website.
6. Verify — Google will offer video, phone, email or postcard. Follow the instructions carefully.

After verification

• Add opening hours, including special hours for holidays.
• Write a clear 750-character description: what you do, who you serve, where. Mention your area naturally.
• Add services or products with short descriptions.
• Upload at least 10 real photos: exterior with signage, interior, team, work.

Mistakes that get new profiles suspended

• Keywords or locations stuffed into the business name
• Virtual offices, co-working desks or PO boxes as addresses
• Creating a second profile for the same business
• Changing name, address and category all at once right after verification
