Local Search Tips for Kolkata Businesses: Landmarks, Language and Service Areas

Simple, practical ways Kolkata businesses can match how local customers actually search on Google.

Search the way Kolkata talks

Kolkata customers describe places by landmarks, crossings and metro stations more than by street numbers. They also mix Bengali, English and Hindi when they search. Small adjustments to your Google Business Profile can match this behaviour and bring more relevant customers.

Use landmarks people actually know

Mention one or two well-known landmarks in your description and posts, for example:

  • Near Gariahat crossing or Shyambazar five point crossing
  • Close to Kavi Subhash or Mahanayak Uttam Kumar metro station
  • Opposite a known market, school or hospital

Keep it natural. A sentence like "two minutes from Jadavpur 8B bus stand" is far more useful than a list of keywords.

Bengali and English search

Many customers search in English letters for Bengali words, such as mishti, telebhaja or ilish. Use these terms in your product names and descriptions where they genuinely apply. Replying to some reviews in Bengali, when the customer wrote in Bengali, also feels personal and builds trust.

Get your area name right

Kolkata areas often have more than one name, and Kolkata itself still appears as Calcutta in some places. Check that:

  • Your address uses the correct locality and PIN code
  • Your website and social pages show the same name, address and phone
  • Your pin sits on the real entrance, not the middle of the road

Service-area businesses

Plumbers, electricians, pest control, home tutors and AC repair services often work across many neighbourhoods. If customers do not visit you:

  • Hide your home address and set a service area instead
  • List realistic areas you actually cover, such as Salt Lake, Lake Town and Baguiati
  • Describe your services clearly so Google understands what you do

Prepare for weather and festivals

Monsoon waterlogging and festival traffic change how people move around the city. Update special hours when you close early or stay open late, and use Google posts to tell customers about delivery or home visits during those times.

Reply fast on calls and WhatsApp

Google Maps sends customers straight to your phone. A missed call often means a lost customer. Keep the listed number active during business hours and respond to WhatsApp messages quickly.

Quick weekly routine

  • Add two or three new photos
  • Reply to all new reviews
  • Check hours and phone are correct
  • Post one update or offer
