Small details, big difference
Many Chennai businesses have a Google Business Profile but treat it as a one-time setup. The businesses that win on Google Maps keep it accurate and useful. Here are practical, local tips you can apply today.
1. Write for how people actually search
Customers search in a mix of English and Tamil, and often add an area name. Use clear service names in your description and services list, and mention the neighbourhoods you serve naturally, for example a clinic in Adyar that also serves Besant Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur.
2. Use landmarks customers know
Chennai addresses can be hard to follow. Help customers with:
- Nearby metro or MRTS stations
- Well-known junctions, temples or bus depots
- Clear directions in your description and photos of your entrance
3. Plan for the monsoon and festivals
- Update special hours during heavy rain days if you close early
- Post a quick update when you are open and operating normally after rains
- Set holiday hours for Pongal, Deepavali, Vinayagar Chaturthi and other local holidays
Customers appreciate knowing you are open before they step out.
4. Keep your contact details reachable
- Add a phone number that is actually answered
- Turn on messaging and link your WhatsApp where possible
- Respond quickly; slow replies lose customers to the next listing
5. Collect reviews every week
Make review requests part of your routine:
- Keep a QR code at the billing counter
- Send a short review link after service on WhatsApp
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and promptly
Never buy reviews or ask staff and family to post fake ones.
6. Post updates regularly
Share offers, new services, events and seasonal updates. Regular posts show customers and Google that your business is active.
7. Check your profile monthly
Anyone can suggest edits to your profile. Check monthly that your name, category, hours, phone and pin location have not been changed without your knowledge.
8. One profile per real location
Do not create profiles for areas where you do not have a real, staffed location. Service-area businesses like plumbers or tutors can set service areas instead of showing an address.
9. Add photos that answer questions
Customers often check photos before they decide. Show your entrance, parking, waiting area, menu or price board (where relevant) and your team at work. Fresh, real photos taken on a phone are better than a few old studio shots, and they help first-time visitors recognise your place from the street.

How often should I post on my Google Business Profile?
Posting regularly, such as once a week, keeps your profile active and gives customers fresh information about offers and updates.
Can I list my business in areas where I do not have an office?
Only as a service area if you travel to customers. Creating fake addresses or profiles for areas without a real location breaks Google guidelines.
